Our heritage

From Acre to a living modern Order

The story begins amid the trials of the Third Crusade and the charitable mission of an English chaplain named William.

Research in medieval records preserved at London’s Guildhall Library traces the tradition to Acre. Those records survived the Great Fire of 1666 and inspired the modern revival of the Order.

Dedicated to St Thomas à Becket, the Order continues to unite Christian masonic fellowship with charitable service.

1189

Roots in the Third Crusade

The historical narrative begins during the Third Crusade, when English forces travelled to the Holy Land.

1191

Service at the Siege of Acre

The chaplain William buried fallen Christian knights and later raised funds to ransom captives. “Acon” derives from Acre.

1973–74

The modern revival

The Commemorative Order was re-established in modern form under charter from the Grand Master’s Council.

2001
